Day 1 - Tue 10 Jun 14, Hippo Farm to Dubai via Brisbane
We finally clipped up our panniers and packed
them into big storage bags which would become our checked-in baggage together
with the bikes. Total weight = 9.8kg. The
clothes Wendy will be wearing on the plane plus handlebar bag and small
backpack all weighed 4.66kg. A full water bottle weighs 805g, so with 2 on the
bike every day, that's another 1.6kg.
Total weight on the bike (minus Wendy) = 16.06kg. Greg’s stats were similar.
As Greg tried to hook the trailer (with the bikes in boxes) up to the CX5, the fitting broke so we had to re-load the bikes into the ute and drive 2 cars to the airport. Thankfully we had Wendy’s mum and dad with us so they could each drive a vehicle home. We stopped and dropped at the airport and then didn't have to wait too long for check-in to open and we were done before 4:30pm. We had lots of time to wait as the flight from Brisbane (BNE) to Hervey Bay (HVB) was delayed. We finally departed HVB at 6:45pm instead of 6pm. We were quite concerned about missing our international connection.
Upon arriving in BNE, we made our way to the bus stop for the free connection to the International Airport, and after racing through Customs, Immigration and Security (we both still had water in our water bottles and had to scull the water or lose the bottle), we made our way to the correct departure gate and found that boarding had been delayed. We vowed never to book the late flight out of HVB again, even if it means a longer wait in BNE; much less stressful.
We had pre-booked seats 51D and 51E as we knew there would be no seats behind us, just the Galley. Little did we know that this was the main Galley and as such is very noisy with food and drinks preparation practically non-stop for the entire flight. Still it was good to not have an annoying person behind you either using the back of your seat as a handle or a restless kid constantly kicking the back of your seat. Wendy was too busy watching movies to sleep, but Greg got quite a bit of sleep which was good for him.
