Day 7 – Monday 16 Jun 14, Quarten to Buchs (Switzerland)

Forecast: 8-24 deg C; Listed Distance: 35km; Distance travelled: 46km; Cumulative distance: 194km;
Quarten: 13 deg C; Buchs: 22 deg C; Wind: NNW 11-14 km/hr; Av speed: 14.4 km/h

Greg coughed most of the night so Wendy didn't sleep very well.  However, we were both up and about before 6am.  Greg went for a wander and I packed and caught up with the "housekeeping".  Breakfast only started at 8am so we had a late start.  But that was probably a good thing for Greg as he was able to have another nap before breakfast and before heading off for the day.  Shame, his first time away with Wendy and he gets sick, a bug from someone on the plane.  It was probably from all the stress associated with being so busy prior to leaving and everyone else wanting their pound of flesh before we left.  Add to that the stress of international travel and you have a double whammy. As we are in Buchs for 2 days, it might be good to have a complete rest tomorrow?  Will see how he feels and looks.
We left Quarten about 9:20am.  Greg was able to ride down the hill; however, Wendy was not quite as adventurous.  We rode on an on-road path for about 10km along the shores of Lake Walensee surrounded by massive cliffs and Alps. The high ones had snow on top, which was nice considering we were riding along in bright sunshine with the temp about 20 deg C.  The scenery was mainly rural: cows, horses, grain crops with some sugar beet. The off-road bike paths cut straight through the farms and properties so you can see right into their way of life so to speak.

After becoming geographically embarrassed a few times (only because the signage was not that flash) we eventually made our way through Sargans and onto the Rhine Cycle Path.  There is a smooth bitumen bike path on both banks, one in Liechtenstein and the other in Switzerland.  After a short ride in Switzerland, we decided to cross over into Liechtenstein where we had our lunch - rolls we had made at breakfast and snuck out of the dining room.  It filled the gap and off we went again thru Balzers and Triesen to Vaduz which was very busy with plenty tourists! We only stopped long enough to take a picture and then kept going until we found the Rhine crossing to Buchs. Greg knew exactly where he was going this time and found the hotel first time. Greg had stayed at this motel in 2012 and rated it the best he'd ever been in.

We had to wait a few minutes as the room was not yet ready. When we did get to the room it was pretty fancy, complete with a sitting area. It also had a coffee machine but each cup costs CHF2!! That's ok as breakfast starts at 6:30am so we can go straight down to brekky and have a coffee there.

Whilst Greg rested, Wendy went for a wander to the pharmacy to get some cough mixture for Greg and came away with tablets instead. On the way back to the hotel, she stopped at CO-OP for some supplies - veggie chips, diet coke and a bottle of wine. In the end, neither of us felt like dinner so we had veggie chips and wine!
